ALERT – this word signifies the message is alerting the brigade members of a fire call – All messages requiring a brigade to turn out will have this word first - a general message eg weather details or a pager test will not have this alert status.
If your brigade has an off air decoder this may, turn on lights, activate the siren and/or open the door automatically.
BAYS3 – this identifies the brigade response area that the fire is in – in this case Bayswater brigade response area number 3.
STRU – this identifies the type of event the brigade is attending, the event types used by CFA are:
- Alarm (ALAR) – any activation of an alarm at a premises that is remotely monitored ASE (Alarm Signalling Equipment)
- Grass and scrub fire (G&S) - any fire involving grass, scrub, trees, vegetation or plantation
- Incident (INCI) - any incident where there is no fire including car accidents, hazardous materials spill or leakage with no ignition
- Non Structure Fire (NOST) – all fires outside a structure, including storage yards, vehicles, trains, rubbish and liquid fires
- Non Structure Fire & Rescue (NS&R) – car on fire with person trapped inside
- Rescue (RESC) – any event where there is the possibility someone is physically trapped such as MVC’s, trench or industrial accidents
- Structure Fire (STRU) – all fires involving or inside a building or structure including houses, outbuildings or ships at berth
- Trench Rescue (TRCH) – rescue is required from a collapsed ditch that is deeper that it is wide
- Confined Space Rescue (CONF) – rescue is required from a confined space which has restricted access and egress
- Structural Collapse Rescue (STCO) - collapse of a building often as a result of fire, weather conditions, earthquake or because a structural component fails
- Mine Collapse (MINE) – rescue is required from a mine that has collapsed
- High Angle Rescue (HIAR) - rescue is required for injured or otherwise incapacitated persons on terrain on very steep slopes, buildings or structures above the ground
It is up to the OIC of the responding appliance to determine the response code for the vehicle based on the requirements or severity of the fire/incident and in line with CFA fire SOPs.
SMOKE ISSUING FROM WINDOWS - this is a brief description of the event the brigade is responding to.
WOOLWORTHS – Commonplace name for the premises eg Hospital or school name, (if available)
22 MAIN RD BAYSWATER– this is the address the caller gave for the fire
ALPHA RD/BETA ST – these are the nearest streets on either side of the address
M - this indicates the map book that the address can be found in, it this case the Melway or in the case of a Spatial Vision Map Book SVC (In square A1 of Melways)
12345 A1 (123456) – this is the map reference for the address given by the caller including the six figure map book reference it this case the Melway or in the case of a Spatial Vision Map Book 6666 D8 (123456)

CBAYS – This is the mnemonics or short names of the brigades that have been paged for the event, the C in front indicates it is the CFA brigade being responded, and SES unit would have an S
F24010101000 – this is the unique fire call number for tracking purposes
[BAYS] – This is the mnemonic or short name of the paging group this message has been sent to
